How do you put a whole gallery wall together with all these decisions that have to be made? Which frames to use, which prints, and how should the frames be placed? There is a lot that can vary from one gallery wall to another and it can make it quite complicated to put a gallery wall together. To help and make this work easier, we have gathered a lot of inspirational pictures and tips on how to proceed. Feel free to use these examples directly or as inspiration for your completely unique gallery wall. There is no right or wrong and you get far from your gut feeling!

Selecting picture frames

When choosing a picture frame there are several different methods to use. You can, for example, choose to have a more discreet picture frame that does not take as much focus, such as a black, white or light wooden frame. These are often very universal and fit in most rooms and interior styles, and they do not set the tone in the room as much as for example a golden frame does. It can also be very nice to match the frame with other furniture and decoration, for example if you have oak furniture in the room and match with oak frames on the wall. It is often best not to have too many types of wood in the interior at the same time. Depending on the interior design style you have, you can also match frames with the style, for example metal frames for rustic interior styles or dark wooden frames for marine styles.

Which prints should I use?

The next step is to choose prints for your frames, and here we also have a few different suggestions for methods. One way to choose prints is to match the colors in the print with the rest of the room, for example if you have a consistent green color in prints and have the corresponding green curtains or perhaps a blanket. It can also be nice to choose a complementary color to what is in the room, and for example have prints in purple if you have yellow in the other interior. Another method is to choose a clear theme for the content of prints. It could for instance be if you have pictures of buildings together with pictures of fashion or people in the cities, which together would create an urban theme.

White margin or passepartout?

As a final step after choosing frames and prints, you can choose to add white margins around the pictures or maybe a passepartout on top. If you have a very colorful and eclectic picture in a picture frame it can sometimes look a bit too much from a distance, especially if you have several prints in a gallery wall. Therefore, it can be nice to add more white in the frame because it tones down the impression, but at the same time gives more focus on the picture itself. A passepartout is a piece of cardboard you place on top of a print and it covers part of the image, while a white margin is printed together with the print and makes the picture smaller.
